Speech pathologists play a crucial role in nursing homes by providing specialized care for individuals with communication and swallowing disorders. At Hanrahan Health, we provide care to most of our local nursing homes.

Predominantly, we are employed to conduct swallowing assessments and reviews to ensure the safety of resident’s swallows. Many residents in nursing homes experience swallowing difficulties due to deconditioning, diagnoses such as Parkinson’s Disease or dementia, or the palliative care process. Swallowing difficulties can lead to nutritional deficiencies, reduced appetite, or aspiration pneumonia. Speech pathologists evaluate swallowing function and develop strategies to improve safety and efficiency during eating and drinking. We may recommend diet modifications, swallowing exercises, and provide education to residents, caregivers, and nursing home staff.

Occasionally, we may also be asked to conduct some communication therapy if there are difficulties impairing communication between a resident and the staff. Speech pathologists work with individuals who may have difficulty speaking, understanding language, or using alternative communication methods such as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. They use various techniques and exercises to enhance speech, language, and cognitive abilities.

Another primary role of the speech pathologist is to educate residents, families, and caregivers about communication strategies and swallowing safety to improve functional independence and overall quality of life. We provide regular education sessions on how to best promote and ensure safe and enjoyable mealtimes for the residents.

By addressing communication and swallowing challenges, speech pathologists in nursing homes contribute significantly to residents' overall well-being, safety, and quality of life.
